Priorities

Below are my key priorities that would be central to my role as OCDSB trustee:

    • I will work to maintain the commitment to meet the recommendations outlined in the Report of the OCDSB’s “Policy and Practice Review of Police Involvement in Schools”. This includes a firm commitment to uphold the board’s decision to end the School Resource Officer (SRO) program and continued work to ensure that any and all police involvement in schools respects the recommendations set forth in this report.
    • I will prioritize addressing the wide range of racist and colonial practices and policies that persist in OCDSB schools. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring the main priorities identified in the board’s Indigenous, Equity and Human Rights Roadmap are implemented and under ongoing review, as well as consulting with key students and community leaders with experience and expertise in the area of anti-racism and decolonization.
    • I will advocate for the effective and prompt implementation of the recommendations made in the Right to Read Inquiry Report from the Ontario Human Rights Commission. While this inquiry was focused on reading disabilities, it is clear that the key recommendations and observations from this inquiry shed light on how outdated many of the practices surrounding support and accommodations for disabled and neurodiverse students are. On these issues, I would bring a well-researched, evidence-based approach to policy design and implementation, prioritizing input from students and community members with lived experience in these areas.
    • I will prioritize implementing the OCDSB’s Mental Health Strategy and encourage continued collaboration with students on effective approaches to supporting a well-rounded approach to health, well-being, and student success.
    • I will continue to build on the OCDSB’s current plan and commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.  Ensuring that the pillars of this plan are successfully put into place, maintained and re-evaluated regularly as recommendations in this area evolve.
